Diosgenin is the important basic material in the manufacture of the steroid hormone drugs. Diosgenin, a phytosteroid sapogenin, is the product of hydrolysis by acids, strong bases, or enzymes of saponins, extracted from the tubers of Dioscorea wild yam, such as the Kokoro.

Diosgenin has a melting point of 204-207 °C. Soluble in gasoline, ethanol, chloroform and other organic solvents, insoluble in water.

Diosgenin is an important raw material for semi-synthetic steroids. The diterpene diketol can be prepared by subjecting diosgenin to ring opening, oxidation, hydrolysis and elimination. Dehydroepiandrosterone can be obtained by deuteration, rearrangement and hydrolysis. These intermediates are of great value in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.
